Preparations are being made for our annual medical mission trip to Nicaragua. The following information has been created to provide a basic understanding of the scope and preliminary details surrounding this trip. First of all, if you haven’t participated on a trip like this before, we have found this article from the Journal for Nurse Practitioners to be very informative.
This trip is a partnership between Healthy Neighbors International and In His Steps Nicaragua. In His Steps Nicaragua is a Christian organization based in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Eric and Wendy Harbinson, founders of In His Steps Nicaragua, have been in Matagalpa for over 5 years. Their hearts desire is to see God change the lives of the people they come in contact with. One way they accomplish this is to provide for basic needs the Nicaraguan people normally would not have access to. That is where Healthy Neighbors International comes in. Our organization is dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve. That is what make this the ideal partnership. In His Steps Nicaragua connects us with communities that benefit greatly from our service and in turn we expand their ability to reach people they may never meet otherwise.
The cost of the trip is $750.00 per person for the week not including airfare. This money will cover accommodations, meals, transportation and translators while in Nicaragua. Accommodations are dormitory style rooms that include linens, hot showers and air conditioning. Typically, Wi-Fi internet is available in the hotel so you should have relatively reliable connectivity there every day. Know that the area we are staying in does occasionally lose water and electric service so there are no guarantees. In addition to the trip cost, you will be responsible for the cost of air fare, baggage, travel insurance (if desired), meals on both travel days, and a $10.00 fee for a tourist card to enter Nicaragua.
Due to the distance from the airport in Managua to the city of Matagalpa all participants are expected to commit to the entire week. All participants are required to obtain their own airline tickets to and from Managua Nicaragua. Everyone must arrive in Managua on Saturday July 7th or before. We will procure lodging for everyone at a hotel in Managua for Saturday night and leave for the city of Matagalpa early Sunday morning. The hotel we are staying at provides free shuttle service from the airport to the hotel.
Please be aware that due to the extensive administrative overhead required to maintain the proper records, Healthy Neighbors will not be accepting tax deductible donations towards individual trip expenses. Therefore, if you decide to do any fund raising to cover some or all of your expenses for this trip please be aware that donations will not be deductible on the individual’s tax return. It is important you make everyone you talk to aware of this before accepting any donations from them. On the other hand, since Healthy Neighbors International is a recognized 501(c)(3), money you outlay for the trip expenses may be tax deductible. Because everyone's tax filing is different, you should always check with a certified tax accountant to determine if you are eligible to deduct some or all of your expenses.
For logistic reasons the team will be limited to 30 people. The team will be comprised of doctors, medical support and general support personnel. At some point we may need to make decisions on who can participate in order to keep the team balanced. Therefore, it is beneficial for you to get your deposit in as soon as possible.
