Today marks a huge step forward for our clean air initiative. After extensive research discussions, and patience (as things tend to move slower in Nicaragua), 25 Ecocina stoves from the Avanza stove factory in Estelí were delivered to homes in San Antonio. These stoves are designed to significantly reduce indoor air pollution caused by the smoldering fires traditionally used for cooking. Not only were the recipients excited, but the delivery and demonstration of the stoves also sparked a great stir among the other community residents.

We are deeply grateful to Eric and Wendy Harbinson, who played a crucial role on the ground for this project, and to David DeJong, whose organization provided a substantial subsidy for the stove purchases. Each recipient also contributed 150 Córdoba (approximately $5) towards the cost of the stoves. While this may seem like a modest amount, for these individuals, it represents two weeks’ wages.

We eagerly anticipate returning to the community during our trip next year to witness the positive impact these stoves will have had.
